Family travel in Switzerland can be easy, if you string together short train hops, interactive museums and one mountain day that wows without exhausting the kids. This family-friendly itinerary for Switzerland follows what our travellers with children actually book, then we test it ourselves with strollers in tow.
We use 1 CHF equals roughly ₹92 for conversions here. Always check live rates when you book. Checked: June 2026.
Introduction to Family Travel in Switzerland
- Visa for Indians: Switzerland is in Schengen. Apply via VFS Global for a short-stay C visa. Fee €80 per adult, €40 ages 6 to 11, free under 6. Processing usually 15 calendar days, can extend in peak season. Start 4 to 6 weeks before travel. Sources: State Secretariat for Migration SEM and VFS Global Switzerland. Last checked: June 2026.
- Train ease: Swiss Travel Pass covers most intercity trains, boats and many museums. Add the free Swiss Family Card so kids under 16 ride free with a parent. A 4‑day pass starts around CHF 281, about ₹25,900. Source: Switzerland Tourism pass page. Checked: June 2026. We rode with a folded stroller on IC trains, doors flush to platform made it painless.
- When to go: April to October for lake boats and open alpine play zones. July and August are the busiest. We like late May or early September for fewer crowds and lower hotel rates.
- What this week covers: Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Zermatt, Geneva and Bern. Train segments kept under 3 hours, nap compliant.
Day 1: Arrival in Zurich, exploring the city

Easy family plan, 6 to 7 hours total:
- Old Town wander, 1 hour. Flat cobbles, stroller friendly around Niederdorf.
- Lake Zurich boat loop, 1.5 hours. Short round trips from Bürkliplatz are included with the Swiss Travel Pass. Timetables on Zürichsee Schifffahrt. Checked: June 2026. We grab takeaway pretzels and sit upstairs for views.
- Zurich Zoo, 2 to 3 hours. Penguins and Masoala Rainforest are kid magnets. Tickets about CHF 29 adults, CHF 13 kids 6 to 15, roughly ₹2,670 and ₹1,200. Tram 6 goes to Zoo. Source: Zurich Zoo tickets. Checked: June 2026.

Where to stay
- Near Zurich HB if you want zero transfers with kids, or Seefeld for quieter nights near the lake. We have stayed at family rooms near HB and appreciated luggage storage after red-eye flights.
First-hand tip: Buy a 6‑pack of still water at Coop when you land. Hotel bottles are pricey.
Day 2: Lucerne, a day of adventure
Train Zurich HB to Luzern, 45 to 50 minutes, frequent direct trains. Covered by the pass. Without a pass, saver fares start around CHF 9 to 15 per adult if booked early. Source: SBB. Checked: June 2026.

Common mistakes Indians make, and quick fixes
- Booking Jungfraujoch on a tight day, then missing naps and trains. Fix, do Harder Kulm or Männlichen for views, save Jungfraujoch for a future teens trip.
- Not adding the free Swiss Family Card. Fix, ask for it when you buy the Swiss Travel Pass, carry kids’ passports.
- Underestimating lift maintenance in May and November. Fix, check each lift’s calendar two weeks out, have a lake day back-up.
- Packing only spicy snacks. Fix, Swiss food is mild. Carry a small masala kit, we do this and it saves restaurant meals for picky eaters.
- Forgetting coins for lockers and public toilets. Fix, keep CHF 1 and 2 coins or a contactless card.
How to get around with kids
- Use the SBB Mobile app for live platforms. We set alerts for our connections and pick carriages with family areas when listed.
- Strollers, compact and foldable works best. Most stations have lifts, but smaller mountain stops can have stairs.
- Luggage, rail stations have coin lockers and same-day luggage services. Source: SBB luggage. Checked: June 2026.
Where to base if you prefer fewer hotel changes
- 2 nights Zurich, 2 nights Lucerne, 2 nights Interlaken, 1 night Bern. Do Zermatt as a long day from Interlaken only if kids can handle a 5‑hour round trip. We prefer sleeping in Zermatt for a slower pace.
Food notes for Indian families
- Veg is easy in cities. Jain-friendly customisations possible at pizzerias and Asian spots. Halal options in Zurich and Geneva are common. Carry a small rice cooker or instant poha packets for early breakfasts.
Connectivity and payments
- eSIMs from Airalo or local SIM at Zurich Airport. Power plug type J, many hotels have universal sockets. Cards accepted almost everywhere. Keep small cash for mountain kiosks.
Safety and health
- Tap water is potable. Sun is strong at altitude, pack SPF 50 and caps. Altitude days, go slow, hydrate, watch for headaches.
Worth it vs skip for families
- Worth it: Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, Gornergrat in Zermatt, Harder Kulm or Männlichen, Gurten playground in Bern, lake cruises anywhere.
- Skip for now: Full Jungfraujoch day with toddlers, long museum marathons, late dinners after 21:00 when trains thin out.
Quick planning checklist
- Visas via VFS Global, file 4 to 6 weeks out. Keep Swiss hotel bookings, insurance with €30,000 coverage and return flights ready. Source: SEM and VFS Global. Last checked: June 2026.

- Reserve one mountain day, check weather 24 hours prior, move it earlier or later within your week if storms roll in.
