We have found eVISA logins to be picky about file sizes. Compress PDFs and JPGs under 2 MB each to avoid upload errors.
Veg, halal and meds notes:
- Pack a short food letter for school-age kids if they have allergies. Many venues understand but labels are mostly in Japanese.
- Prescription meds, carry the doctor’s note and original packaging. For CPAP or larger quantities, check Yakkan Shoumei guidance. Last checked: June 2026.
Best Seasons to Visit Japan with Kids
- Spring, March to May, mild 10 to 20°C, cherry blossom crowds but easy park days.
- Autumn, September to November, comfy 12 to 22°C, fewer queues post-October.
- Summer, June to August, hot and humid in cities, great for Hokkaido and Okinawa. Expect rain in June.
- Winter, December to February, dry and cold, easy museum days, magical illuminations.
Our April Kyoto loop with two primary-schoolers felt easiest: jackets in mornings, T-shirts by noon, and stroller naps were a breeze.

Navigating Japan's Transportation System with Children
City transport, easy mode
- Get an IC card, Suica or PASMO in Tokyo, ICOCA in Kansai. Deposit 500 JPY, top up with cash or card, refunds at designated counters with a small fee. Kids IC cards give half fares, carry passports for age proof. Sources: JR East Suica, PASMO. Checked: June 2026.
- Strollers are fine. Fold on crowded trains, use elevators signed with the universal wheelchair icon. We have wheeled a compact stroller through Shinjuku and Osaka Station with zero issues, just allow 10 extra minutes for elevator queues.
Airport to city
- Tokyo Narita, Narita Express about 3,070 JPY to Tokyo Station, 60 minutes, all reserved seats, kids about half. Source: JR East NEX. Checked: June 2026.
- Tokyo Haneda, Keikyu to Shinagawa about 300 to 410 JPY, 20 minutes. Source: Keikyu. Checked: June 2026.
- Osaka Kansai, Nankai Rap:t to Namba about 1,450 to 1,650 JPY, 35 to 40 minutes. Source: Nankai Electric Railway. Checked: June 2026.
Intercity with the Shinkansen
- JR Pass, 7-day Ordinary now about 50,000 to 51,700 JPY for adults, kids 6 to 11 years half, under 6 free without their own seat. Worth it if you do at least Tokyo to Kyoto and Kyoto to Hiroshima return in 7 days, otherwise buy point-to-point. Source: Japan Rail Pass official. Checked: June 2026.
- Seat choices, book Reserved Car seats to sit together, ask for the last row to park luggage behind. We request seats E and D on the Tokaido line for Mt Fuji views on clear mornings. Source for reservations: JR Central Online Reservation. Checked: June 2026.
Bags without the drama
- Coin lockers at most big stations, 300 to 900 JPY per 3 hours. For big suitcases, use luggage forwarding, 2,000 to 3,500 JPY per bag, next-day delivery. Source: Yamato TA-Q-BIN. Checked: June 2026.
Where to Stay: Family-Friendly Areas in Japan
Tokyo
- Shinjuku, best connections, food courts and late-night conbini. We like being near Shinjuku-sanchome for quieter nights.
- Shibuya, easy to walk, direct trains to Harajuku and Yoyogi Park. Family rooms are pricier.
- Asakusa, calmer, close to Senso-ji, direct Ginza Line to Ueno. Many mid-range hotels offer triple rooms.
- Odaiba, large rooms, malls and indoor play areas, 25 to 35 minutes to central Tokyo.
Kyoto
- Kyoto Station area, the easiest with kids, buses and JR lines under one roof, lots of casual dining.
- Gion or Shijo, walkable evenings and quick bus hops to Kiyomizu-dera, but many lanes are cobbled, strollers need patience.
- Arashiyama, peaceful stays, great for a 2-night temple and bamboo focus, farther from the Shinkansen.
Osaka
- Namba, food and neon, direct Nankai train to airport, quick to USJ via JR lines.
- Umeda, huge transport hub, good for day trips to Himeji or Kobe, underground malls for rainy days.
Okinawa
- Onna Village and Chatan, resort beaches, bigger rooms, rental car is handy. Book early in July and August.
First-hand tip: Japanese hotel rooms run small, we look for at least 22 to 26 sqm for a family of three. Capsule-style rooms are fun for teens, not for toddlers.
Budgeting for Your Family Trip to Japan
Anchors in ₹ for a family of three, 2 adults plus 1 child, excluding flights:
- Hotels, business to mid-range, ₹8,000 to ₹18,000 per night for a triple or 22 to 26 sqm double with extra bed in Tokyo or Kyoto, a bit lower in Osaka. High season cherry blossom weeks can spike 20 to 30 percent.
- Meals, ₹5,000 to ₹9,000 per day, a mix of depachika bento, ramen, curry rice and mall food courts. Veg families do fine at chain curry spots, Italian joints, and department store basements where labels show allergens.
- City transport, ₹1,800 to ₹3,000 per day, depends on how much you ride. Kids half price on JR, similar discounts on subways.
- Intercity, Tokyo to Kyoto Shinkansen one way, adults about 14,000 to 15,000 JPY, roughly ₹6,500 to ₹8,500 each depending on the rate. Kids half.
- Attractions, theme park days swing the budget, Disneyland or USJ tickets often total ₹12,000 to ₹22,000 for a family of three for one day. Regular temple or museum days are more like ₹1,000 to ₹2,500.
Flights
- Return fares India to Tokyo or Osaka usually ₹38,000 to ₹85,000 per adult in economy. Book 8 to 10 weeks out for March to May and September to November.
Money notes
- Cards widely accepted, but keep ¥10,000 to ¥20,000 cash handy for small eateries and shrines. We have used IC cards to pay at konbini and some vending machines, very handy.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Traveling with Kids
Worth it vs skip for Indian families
- Worth booking seats together on Shinkansen, skip unreserved cars at peak hours if traveling with strollers or big bags.
- Worth choosing one theme park only if you have under-8s, two parks back-to-back drains energy and budget.
- Worth staying near major stations, skip cheaper outskirts that add 40 minutes each way and kill nap flexibility.
Common mistakes Indians make
- Packing too many cities in 7 days. Keep it to Tokyo and Kyoto or Osaka. Add day trips, not new hotel moves.
- Assuming JR Pass always saves money. Do the math versus single tickets. Source: Japan Rail Pass. Last checked: June 2026.
- Not reserving theme park dates. Both Disney and USJ use variable pricing and can sell out, especially March to May and late October. Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead.
- Overlooking coin lockers. Use station lockers to lighten sightseeing, 300 to 900 JPY beats hauling bags into temples.
- Veg families not pre-marking a few safe chains. We pin CoCo Ichibanya veg menu branches, Italian chains like Saizeriya, and department store food floors.
Extra tips for traveling in Japan with kids
- Connectivity, rent a pocket Wi-Fi or get an eSIM. Public Wi-Fi is patchy. Source: JNTO connectivity tips. Checked: June 2026.
- Etiquette, no loud calls on trains, eat off to the side, and no tipping. Kids pick this up quickly when you model it.
- Power, Type A and B plugs, 100V. Your Indian chargers work with a travel adapter, but hair tools without dual voltage may not.
