Introduction to Georgia: a blend of cultures

Georgia sits between Europe and Asia, so your days jump from Persian-style caravanserais to Orthodox churches, Soviet balconies and hipster wine bars. Our travellers keep telling us two things. The Kazbegi drive beats pricier Alpine routes on views, and Tbilisi’s old-town plus bathhouses are the vibe-lifter after a long flight.

  • Trip feel in ₹: couples and families spending ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 per person per day on food, local transport and basic tickets feel comfortable, hotels extra. Based on Keego trips in April 2026.
  • Where first timers base: 3 nights Tbilisi, 1 or 2 nights Kazbegi, 1 or 2 nights Kakheti, then add Batumi or Svaneti if you have a week.

If you prefer a ready plan, see our tour lineup, then customise the pacing to your style.

Visa and entry requirements for Indian travellers

Good news, the process is straightforward, but do not wing it at check in.

  • E-visa: Available for Indian passport holders. Apply online, typical processing 5 to 10 working days, fee varies by single or multiple entry. Official portal: www.geoconsul.gov.ge/en/visaInformation (Last checked: June 2026).
  • Visa-free entry with third-country visas: Indian passport holders who have a valid, used multiple-entry visa or residency for the US, UK, Schengen or UAE are often eligible for visa-free entry up to 90 days in any 180. Confirm your case on the MFA portal before flying. Source: Georgia MFA, same link above. Last checked: June 2026.
  • Passport validity: Keep 6 months validity from entry date and at least 2 blank pages. Airlines do check.
  • Documents airlines have asked our travellers for at check in, April 2026: return ticket, hotel bookings or invitation, 1 or 2 day’s cash or bank proof, travel insurance PDF.

We once had a traveller with a valid US B1/B2 but unused. Airline denied boarding. Use means you must have entered the US, UK or Schengen at least once on that visa. Source: Georgia MFA advisory, Last checked: June 2026.

Best time to visit Georgia: seasonal insights

You can go year round, just choose your season vibe.

  • May to June, September to October, sweet spot for cities, wine country, light hikes. 15 to 25°C in Tbilisi. Source: national season summary. Last checked: June 2026.

First-hand tip, we did Tbilisi in late May and carried a light jacket for evenings. Kakheti vineyards were green, road traffic light, and hotel rates 10 to 20 percent lower than July weekends.

Subfreezing bathhouse hack, in January a 60 to 90 minute private room at Chreli Abano warmed us up post sunset walk, and cost about 120 to 200 GEL for the room, plus 10 to 20 GEL per person for scrubs. Book same day by phone. Official site: www.chreliabano.ge/ Prices vary. Checked: June 2026.

  • Tbilisi to Kakheti, Telavi or Sighnaghi, 2 to 3 hours by marshrutka, 15 to 20 GEL, ₹600 to ₹800. Wineries need local taxis once there.

Must-visit destinations: from Tbilisi to Kazbegi

This section uses routes our travellers loved, with time and cost reality checks.

  • Tbilisi, 2 to 3 nights. Old Tbilisi lanes, Narikala Fortress by cable car, sulfur baths, Dry Bridge flea market. Entry fees are small, 5 to 30 GEL range, many sights are free. First-hand, we loved booking a 1 hour private bath post sunset, then a khachapuri run at 21:00 when queues drop.
  • Kazbegi, 1 to 2 nights. The Georgian Military Highway itself is the show. Stop at Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Fortress, Gudauri Viewpoint, Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument, then the final climb to Gergeti Trinity Church. A 4x4 up to Gergeti from Stepantsminda is 80 to 120 GEL round trip per car, split 4 ways it is ₹600 to ₹900 per person. We have also hiked it in 1.5 to 2 hours each way in June, carry a windbreaker.
  • Kakheti, 1 to 2 nights. Telavi for classic wineries, Sighnaghi for cobbled streets and valley views. Most winery tours with 3 to 4 tastings are 25 to 60 GEL, ₹1,000 to ₹2,400. Book direct with the estate to avoid no-shows. If you prefer us to line up a driver plus tastings, we bundle this smoothly on our Georgia Classic Discovery, link above.
  • Batumi, 2 to 3 nights. Seaside promenade, Alphabetic Tower, summer nightlife. Best in July and August. Trains from Tbilisi are comfortable, see Georgian Railways link above.
  • Svaneti, 2 to 3 nights. Ushguli and Mestia for towers and big-mountain day hikes, June to September. Allow a full day to get there from Kutaisi or Zugdidi. Card acceptance drops, take cash.

Travellers keep saying the Kazbegi day is their highlight. One Keego traveller said the mountain views were better than what they saw in Switzerland, and kinder on the wallet.

Safety tips for Indian tourists in Georgia

  • Overall safety, high. We walk Old Tbilisi past 22:00 comfortably. Keep normal caution in underpasses and quiet alleys.
  • Taxi safety, order on Bolt, avoid street hails after dark. Drivers rarely speak Hindi or much English, pin the destination in-app.
  • Currency safety, exchange only at licensed booths. We got competitive rates on Rustaveli Avenue and in malls, April 2026.
  • Winter roads, Kazbegi and Gudauri can get snow closures. Check the Roads Department alerts the morning you go. Site, www.georoad.ge/en, Last checked: June 2026.
  • Dietary communication, save “I am vegetarian, no meat, no fish” in Georgian on your phone. “Me var vegetarianeli, ar vitsav korms, tskhals.” Staff are helpful when shown this line.

Common mistakes Indians make, and how to fix them

  • Assuming a valid but unused US or Schengen visa gives visa-free Georgia entry. It must be used at least once. Fix, carry proof of entry stamp or ESTA/ETIAS record where relevant. Source, Georgia MFA. Last checked: June 2026.
  • Booking a Kazbegi day trip without buffer for weather or road works. Fix, keep an extra morning or do 1 night in Stepantsminda so you have two shots at Gergeti views.
  • Underestimating distances in Svaneti. Fix, break the journey with a night in Zugdidi, and carry cash. ATMs can be down in mountain villages.
  • Expecting UPI acceptance. Fix, carry a zero-markup forex card and 200 to 300 GEL in cash for rural days.
  • Ordering khinkali like momos and slicing them. Local style is to bite and sip. For veg, ask for mushroom or potato, specify no broth if you prefer.
