Introduction to Egypt for Indian Travellers

Cairo’s chaos, Giza’s pyramids, Luxor’s temples and Aswan’s laid-back Nile, all in one trip. From Mumbai or Delhi you can be in Cairo the same day, then connect south to Luxor or Aswan.

First-hand tip, we like to land in Cairo, do Giza early, then fly to Luxor for temples and end in Aswan for slower Nile vibes. It saves backtracking.

  • Typical first trip, 7 to 10 days, Cairo and Giza 3 nights, Luxor 3 nights, Aswan 2 nights. Add a day trip to Abu Simbel from Aswan if you are keen on big-ticket sites.
  • Direct flight alert, EgyptAir has operated nonstops like Mumbai to Cairo around 6.5 hours. One-stop via the Gulf is common from other Indian cities. Check timings before you lock internal flights. Checked, June 2026 on EgyptAir’s schedule page.

Visa Requirements for Indian Passport Holders

Short version, apply online. It is simpler than many think.

  • Type, Tourist e-Visa, single entry or multiple entry.
  • Fees, Single entry USD 25, about ₹2,100. Multiple entry USD 60, about ₹5,000. You pay online by card. Source, Egypt e-Visa official portal www.visa2egypt.gov.eg/. Last checked, June 2026.
  • Processing time, typically 3 to 7 working days. Apply at least 10 days before travel.
  • Requirements, passport valid 6 months from entry, a clear photo, and a tentative itinerary or hotel booking. Print the approved e-Visa PDF and carry it with the same passport you applied with. Source, visa2egypt.gov.eg. Last checked, June 2026.
  • On arrival visa policies can change and often include extra conditions. We recommend the e-Visa to avoid queues and surprises.

Money saver we used in April 2026, applying as a family in one session on the portal kept all passports tracked together, and approvals landed within 4 days.

Best Time to Visit Egypt

You will enjoy the big sites more in cooler months.

  • October to April, pleasant for Cairo, Giza, Luxor, Aswan. Evenings can be breezy on the Nile. Source, Egyptian Meteorological Authority ema.gov.eg/. Last checked, June 2026.
  • May to September, hot to extremely hot, especially in Luxor and Aswan. Do sunrise and late afternoon touring if you go then.
  • Ramadan, expect shorter hours at some restaurants and slower service before sunset. Tourist sights usually stay open but morning visits are easiest. Always check the day’s hours on the official site, or call your hotel concierge the night before.

We did Luxor in early March, reached Karnak at 08:00, and had the Great Hypostyle Hall almost to ourselves for 30 minutes before tours rolled in.

Navigating Egyptian Cuisine, Vegetarian Options

Worried about veg, Egypt is very doable.

  • Everyday veg wins, koshari, taameya, ful medames, lentil soup, salads, pita with dips like tahini and baba ghanoush.
  • Street chains with clear veg, Zööba has a koshari, taameya and ful lineup. Expect ₹200 to ₹450 per dish in Cairo. Menu and branches, Zööba www.zooba.com/. Checked, June 2026.
  • Indian picks in Cairo, Maharaja in Zamalek and Downtown-style curry houses near Talaat Harb do reliable paneer, dal and rotis. Typical mains ₹500 to ₹900. Check Google Maps hours and call ahead during Ramadan.
  • In Luxor and Aswan, ask for sayyami options, that is fasting-friendly vegan plates many kitchens understand. We got off-menu veg stews in Aswan by asking early, then the chef sent complimentary pickles.

Tip, carry a small sachet of chaat masala. We sprinkle it on koshari or fries for comfort-heat without asking for spicy.

India-specific trick we use with kids, order plain rice plus grilled veg or fries, then add your own masala. It avoids over-salted sauces and is fast between site runs.

Common Itinerary Mistakes to Avoid

  • Packing Cairo, Giza, Saqqara and the Egyptian Museum into one day. You will rush everything. Split them across two days, or drop Saqqara if short on time.
  • Reaching the pyramids after 11:00. Heat and crowds build fast. Be at Giza Plateau at 08:00. Ticketing info, Giza Plateau, Supreme Council of Antiquities egymonuments.gov.eg/monuments/giza-plateau. Day ticket about 540 EGP, roughly ₹1,200. Great Pyramid entry is separate, about 900 EGP, roughly ₹2,000. Last checked, June 2026.
  • Booking the overnight sleeper train last minute. Couples and families often end up with seated coaches. Book at least a week out via the operator or a local agent if you want a private cabin.
  • Doing Abu Simbel as a same-day road run from Aswan and then catching a flight. The convoy leaves around 04:00, you return exhausted by 13:00 to 14:00. Either fly Aswan to Abu Simbel or keep the evening free.
  • Not budgeting camera fees. Some tombs and museums still charge for photography or restrict flashes. The guard will remind you.

Our fix that saved a day in March 2026, we did Saqqara with Memphis in the afternoon after a dawn Giza run, then kept the Museum for the next morning before our flight.

Budgeting Your Trip, Daily Costs in INR

A realistic mid-range daily spend, per person, based on recent trips.

  • Stays, ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 in Cairo, Luxor, Aswan for clean, central 2 to 3 star doubles. Riverside or boutique picks run ₹3,000 to ₹6,000. We liked Zamalek guesthouses for value.
  • Meals, ₹800 to ₹1,200 with one sit-down meal and two quick eats. Street koshari bowls cost ₹120 to ₹220. Zamalek cafe mains ₹400 to ₹900.
  • City transport, ₹200 to ₹600. Uber within central Cairo is usually ₹120 to ₹350 per ride. Cairo Metro rides are cheap for short hops.
  • Sights, ₹500 to ₹1,500 depending on your day’s mix. Example prices from SCA, Egyptian Museum Tahrir around 300 EGP, roughly ₹660. Luxor Temple around 260 EGP, roughly ₹570. Official listings, egymonuments.gov.eg/. Last checked, June 2026.
  • Nile cruise add-on, 3 nights Aswan to Luxor can be ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 per person depending on ship and season. Book early January to March for April sailings.

Currency watch, EGP has fluctuated. A working rate in June 2026 was about 1 EGP ≈ ₹2.2. Check your bank or XE www.xe.com/ on the week you travel. Checked, June 2026.

Money habit we follow, withdraw a small float at airport ATMs, then top up in town where rates and machine limits are friendlier. Keep small notes for tips.

Recommended Areas to Stay in Egypt

Cairo

  • Zamalek, leafy island and central for food and Nile views. Great for first-timers and families. We walked to cafes and used Uber for sights.
  • Downtown, walkable to the Egyptian Museum and cheap eats. Budget stays, lively at night.
  • Giza, for pyramid-view rooms and sunrise starts. Quieter after dark, plan dinners at the hotel or order in.
  • Heliopolis, handy for late arrivals and early departures near CAI. Consider for one night only.

Luxor

  • East Bank, close to Luxor Temple, restaurants, and ferries. Good without a car.
  • West Bank, calmer with guesthouses near the Valleys. Factor ferry or taxi time to cross the Nile.

Aswan

  • Corniche and Elephantine Island for Nile breezes and easy boat trips. We loved sundowners on the Corniche after temple days.

We book cancellable rates for flexibility. Egypt hotels often allow free cancellation until 48 hours before arrival. Always read the rate’s policy.

Getting Around, Transportation Tips

Within cities

  • Cairo, Uber and Careem are the simplest. Expect ₹120 to ₹350 for most central hops. Cairo Metro is helpful for Downtown runs at very low fares, buy a paper ticket at the counter.
  • Giza, for the plateau, take Uber to the Main Gate on Al Haram Street. Keep small notes for camel or carriage tips if you hire them inside.
  • Luxor and Aswan, taxis are plentiful, and the public ferry in Luxor connects East and West Banks cheaply. Agree on taxi fares before riding.

Airports

  • Cairo International CAI, Uber pickup works at T2 and T3. Airport taxis post fixed rates but confirm before you sit. A typical Uber to Zamalek runs ₹600 to ₹1,000 depending on surge.
  • Local SIMs, Vodafone and Orange counters after arrivals. Expect about ₹600 to ₹1,200 for 10 to 20 GB. Carry passport and pay by card or cash. We used an Orange 20 GB pack and had stable data across Cairo and Luxor. Checked, June 2026 at airport counters.

Intercity

  • Flights, Cairo to Luxor or Aswan is about 1 hour. Book 3 to 6 weeks out for lower fares.
  • Trains, seated day trains are cheap, but long. Sleeper trains cost more and require advance booking in high season. If travelling with kids, flights are kinder.
  • Nile cruises, a relaxed way to link Aswan and Luxor. Confirm which temples are guided and which you cover by road, and check inclusions like water and tips.

Power, money, and payments

  • Plugs, Type C and Type F, same as many EU countries. Carry a universal adapter.
  • Cash vs UPI, UPI will not work. Carry a fee-free international card, plus EGP cash for small buys and tips. ATMs are common in city centres.

India-specific airport tip we use, at CAI immigration keep your printed hotel booking handy. It speeds up basic questions, and you avoid fumbling for your phone if airport data is slow.

Some big-ticket prices to plan around, from the Supreme Council of Antiquities. Convert at 1 EGP ≈ ₹2.2 for a ballpark.

Policies and prices can change. Re-check a week before your trip.

Tours and day experiences we rate for first timers

No fluff, here are experiences our travellers actually enjoyed, with how to plan them.

  • Half day at Giza with interior entry, budget about ₹1,200 for the plateau ticket and ₹2,000 for Great Pyramid if you want the interior. Be at the gate by 08:00. Keep ₹200 to ₹400 cash for on-site tips. We hired a local guide at the gate in March 2026 for ₹2,200 after a short bargain, Hindi was basic but workable.
  • Luxor West Bank essentials in one morning, Valley of the Kings plus Hatshepsut and Colossi. Start 07:30, be at the Valley by 08:00 to see 3 open tombs before queues. Set aside ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 for tickets depending on add-ons like Seti I which is premium priced.
  • Nubian Village by small boat from Aswan, 2 to 3 hours. We paid ₹1,800 for a private motorboat from the Corniche in April 2026. Ask for a tea stop and confirm return time. Carry small notes for spice or magnet buys.

Worth it vs skip

  • Worth it, sunrise hot air balloon in Luxor if winds allow, views over the Necropolis are special and the early start beats heat.
  • Skip if short on time, the Cairo sound and light show at Giza, use that evening for a Nile dinner or Khan el Khalili stroll instead.

Indian traveller, lesser-known tips that save time and money

  • Friday planning, many locals attend Friday prayers around 12:00 to 13:30. We do Giza or the Museum early, then a late lunch. Traffic eases a bit before prayers, then builds.
  • Card terminal trap, some shops try dynamic currency conversion to INR with bad rates. Insist on paying in EGP on the machine. We declined conversion twice and saved about 3 to 4 percent.
  • Halal and veg together, most eateries are halal by default. If you need pure veg cookware, say vegetarian, la lahma wala firakh, no meat or chicken, and ask for sayyami.
  • Tipping math, keep a roll of 5s and 10s EGP. For clean toilets or quick help, ₹20 to ₹50 in EGP terms is fine. Avoid handing INR, it is hard for them to use.
  • Friday museum hack we used in March 2026, Tahrir Museum doors opened at 09:00, we started in the Tutankhamun rooms first while group tours queued at tickets, then looped back to the ground floor.
  • Train baggage quirk, on sleeper services the cabin rack fits airline carry-ons best. Check in big suitcases on flights if your bag is oversized to avoid aisle clutter.
  • SIM top-ups, Orange and Vodafone street kiosks accept EGP cash for data add-ons. Keep your passport photo on your phone, some clerks ask when loading a new pack.

Common mistakes Indians make, and easy fixes

  • Counting on UPI. It will not work. Fix, carry an international card and around ₹6,000 worth of EGP on arrival for tips and taxis.
  • Expecting North-Indian spice levels by default. Fix, ask for condiments on the side, or use your travel spice kit.
  • Over-squeezing day trips with internal flights. Fix, keep at least 3 hours between a temple run ending and your airport check-in.
  • Underestimating walking at sites. Fix, wear trainers, carry a refillable bottle. Many sites have paid toilets only near the entrance.

That is your Egypt game plan. Keep mornings free for the headline sights, lean on koshari for quick veg fuel, and book the e-Visa early. If you want help locking the route or comparing cruise versus train, ping us.
