First-hand tip: we like staying the first two nights in Downtown Cairo near Tahrir Square. You can walk to the Egyptian Museum in 10 minutes and grab an Uber to Giza in 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. It cuts early-trip chaos.

• Visa on arrival, USD 25, is currently available to Indian passport holders only if you hold a valid multi entry US, UK or Schengen visa or residency. We still recommend applying the eVisa to avoid airport queues.

• Passport validity, at least 6 months from entry, with 2 blank pages. Keep a hotel booking printout and return flight.
• Refunds, eVisa fees are non refundable once processed. If your plans change, reapply.

On our last Cairo landing, the eVisa counter check took 5 minutes because we carried a printout. Travellers who relied on a phone screenshot were asked to email it to an airport desk which cost 20 extra minutes.

Customs Indians ask about:

• Friday prayers, many shops slow down between 12:00 and 14:00. Plan museum or indoor time then. We shift markets to late afternoon.
• Dress at mosques, shoulders and knees covered. Carry a light scarf. Our group borrowed scarves at Sultan Hassan once, but carrying your own saved time.

Cairo and Giza

• Downtown Cairo, near Tahrir Square. Great for museum days and food walks. Midrange rooms ₹3,000 to ₹5,500 per night. We walked to Abou Tarek for koshary and paid 65 EGP per bowl, a filling early dinner. Checked: June 2026, menu in store.
• Zamalek. Leafy island vibe, cafes, quieter at night. Midrange ₹5,000 to ₹8,000, premium Nile view ₹9,000 to ₹15,000.
• Giza Pyramids area. Small guesthouses with terrace views. Doubles ₹2,500 to ₹4,500. Uber to Downtown takes 45 to 70 minutes.

Luxor

• East Bank near Luxor Temple for quick access to the Corniche and restaurants. Midrange ₹2,500 to ₹4,000.
• West Bank for calmer stays closer to Valley of the Kings, doubles ₹2,000 to ₹3,200. We prefer West Bank for sunrise starts, less bridge traffic.

Aswan

• Corniche and Elephantine Island. Midrange rooms ₹3,500 to ₹6,000. Felucca captains usually quote 300 to 600 EGP for a one hour sail at sunset for two to four people. Bargain politely.

Booking notes

• Pay on arrival rates can be 10 to 15 percent higher. Card acceptance is common in Cairo, but smaller guesthouses in Luxor or Aswan prefer cash. Keep EGP on hand.

• Street eats, koshary 50 to 80 EGP, taameya falafel sandwich 15 to 30 EGP. A hearty local lunch for two lands under 200 EGP.

Veg, vegan and halal notes for Indians

• Veg friendly plates are common. Order koshary, taameya, ful, molokhia without meat, and mezze like hummus and baba ghanoush.
• Spice levels are mild. Carry chilli flakes or pickle if you want heat.
• Halal is standard. Pork is rare. Alcohol is limited to licensed restaurants and hotels.

• Cards vs cash. Cards work in big hotels and chains. Tipping, small eateries and taxis are cash first. No UPI. Carry small notes for bathrooms and site shuttles.
• Power plugs are Type C and F, 220V. We carry a universal adaptor and a small power strip for phones and cameras.

Common Itinerary Mistakes to Avoid

Worth it vs skip, India specific

• Cramming Cairo in one day. You will lose 2 to 3 hours in Cairo traffic. Do at least two nights so Giza and the museum both get a fresh morning.
• Noon at the pyramids in March to May. Heat and group crowds peak after 11:00. Enter by 08:00, do the Great Pyramid first, then the Sphinx exit.
• Booking the sleeper train last minute. Cabins sell out on Thursdays and Sundays. Book 10 to 14 days out on the Watania site.
• Visiting the Egyptian Museum on Friday mid day. Many shops close during prayers, and traffic patterns change around mosques. Go 09:00 to 11:00.
• Not carrying USD cash for backup. If a card terminal is down for the eVisa or a hotel, USD 50 to 100 helps.
• Overpacking domestic flights. EgyptAir often enforces 23 kg. Keep souvenirs light till Cairo end.

Common mistakes Indians make, with fixes

• Assuming UPI works. It does not. Fix, carry a fee free forex card and 3,000 to 5,000 EGP cash for first 48 hours.
• Vegetarian panic. You will eat fine. Ask for koshary, taameya, ful, molokhia without meat and say no beef no chicken clearly. In Luxor we found plenty of veg mezze near the Corniche.
• Underestimating queues at sites. Buy tickets online on the Egypt eTickets portal when available, or carry exact change. We saved 20 minutes at Karnak using the eTickets QR.
