Introduction to Central Europe for Families

Why this trio works with kids

  • Short hops by train, Prague to Vienna 4 hours, Vienna to Budapest 2 hours 20 minutes.
  • Walkable historic centres, lots of parks and playgrounds between sights.
  • Great value food, bakeries for quick lunches, hearty portions and plenty of soups for spice shy little ones.

On our last Prague to Budapest run we kept a simple rule, one big sight before lunch, one park or hands on museum after. Zero meltdowns. Plan a fully custom trip with a Keego travel expert When to go

Tips for Traveling with Kids in Central Europe

Common mistakes Indians make, and easy fixes

  • Assuming euro everywhere. Austria uses euro, Prague uses CZK and Budapest uses HUF. Fix, enable foreign currency on your card and use local ATMs for small cash, choose “without conversion” on the machine.
  • Overpacking heavy strollers. Many old towns are cobbled. Fix, carry a lightweight buggy or a soft carrier inside palaces and on trams.
  • Skipping timed tickets. Summer queues eat time. Fix, prebook Prague Castle, Schönbrunn and ZOOM, pick morning slots.
  • Underestimating train seat needs. Kids under 6 ride free but without a guaranteed seat. Fix, add a low cost seat reservation on ÖBB for naps.
  • Expecting UPI. Europe is card first, Visa Mastercard. Fix, use a zero forex card, keep a backup. UPI does not work.

Money and daily costs

  • Accommodation, family room or apartment near transit ₹9,000 to ₹18,000 per night.
  • Food, ₹600 to ₹1,000 per adult per meal at casual spots, kids split mains.
  • Local transport passes, ₹460 to ₹1,500 per adult per day depending on city and duration.
  • Sights, plan ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 per adult per paid attraction.

Connectivity and power

  • eSIMs like Airalo work well, ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 for 5 to 10 GB 7 to 15 days. Physical SIMs at airports cost more.
  • Plug type C and F, carry a universal adapter. Many hotels have bedside USB A, not C.

Trains vs flights

  • With kids, trains win under 5 hours door to door. Fewer security checks, space to walk, no liquid restrictions. We book morning departures so naps happen on board.

Local festivals to watch for kid friendly vibes

  • Prague Easter markets late March or April, gingerbread stalls and puppet shows.
  • Vienna Advent markets late November to December, carousel and light trails.
  • Budapest Spring Festival April, music and street events. Dates vary yearly, check city websites a month out.
