When exactly is cherry blossom season?
- Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka: last week of March to early April.
- Hiroshima and Nara: usually a few days either side of Tokyo.
- Hokkaido: late April to early May.
We watch the Japan Meteorological Corporation forecast each spring. It updates every few days, and locals follow it. Bookmark the English page: JMC Sakura Forecast. Checked: Oct 2024.
First-hand tip: we reached Shinjuku Gyoen at 08:45 on a peak Saturday. By 10:30 the line snaked around the block. Time your entry 09:00 or after 15:30 to avoid tour groups.
Best cherry blossom viewing spots
We cherry-pick places where blossoms and access both work well in a tight itinerary. Expect crowds, but these deliver.
Tokyo
- Chidorigafuchi Moat, Chiyoda: 700 metres of sakura over the moat. Rowboat rental about ₹450 to ₹600 (¥800) for 30 minutes per boat, cash at the kiosk. Queue 20 to 45 minutes on weekends. Source: Chiyoda City Tourism. Checked: Oct 2024.
- Shinjuku Gyoen: mixed varieties mean a longer window. Entry ₹300 (¥500), pay by card or IC. Last entry 16:00 in spring. Official: Shinjuku Gyoen. Checked: Oct 2024. Our travellers liked the tea house near Momijiyama, quiet even at midday.
- Ueno Park and Shinobazu Pond: lanterns at night and easy street food. Free. Festival vibes late March to early April via Ueno Tourism. Checked: Oct 2024.
Kyoto
- Philosopher’s Path, Higashiyama: 2 km canal walk lined with late-blooming trees. Free. Go 07:00 to have it nearly to yourself. We walked north to Ginkaku-ji, then grabbed soy doughnuts at Kamo nearby.
- Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine: the weeping cherry is floodlit at night during sakura season. Free park access. Details via Kyoto City Official Travel Guide. Checked: Oct 2024.
- Kyoto Botanical Gardens: quieter, ideal for families. Entry ₹120 (¥200). Source: Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Checked: Oct 2024.
Osaka
- Osaka Castle Park: wide lawns with a moat backdrop. Park free, castle museum ₹350 (¥600). Official: Osaka Castle Museum. Checked: Oct 2024.

Hiroshima and Miyajima
- Hiroshima Peace Park: poignant and pretty in late March. Park free. Museum ₹120 (¥200). Official: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Checked: Oct 2024.
- Miyajima, Itsukushima Shrine: blossoms frame the floating torii. Shrine admission ₹180 to ₹300 (¥300 to ¥500) by zone. Ferry from Miyajimaguchi every 15 minutes, JR ferry is included with JR passes. Official: Itsukushima Shrine. Checked: Oct 2024. We caught a 07:45 ferry and had the shrine almost empty till 09:00.
Nara

Local festivals in Japan during sakura
Tie your days to an event for extra buzz.
- Ueno Sakura Matsuri, Tokyo: lantern-lit evenings and pop-up stalls, usually late March to early April. Free. Info: Ueno Tourism Association. Checked: Oct 2024.
- Chiyoda Sakura Festival at Chidorigafuchi: moat lights, extended boat hours. Some dates ticketed, posted yearly. Follow Chiyoda Tourism. Checked: Oct 2024. We queued at 18:30, entered at 19:05.
- Osaka Mint Sakura Tunnel: a one-way walk through rare varieties for one week in April. Free, timed slots announced about a week prior. Official: Japan Mint. Checked: Oct 2024.
- Miyako Odori, Kyoto: April geiko and maiko spring dance. Tickets from about ₹3,000 to ₹3,500 (¥5,500). Book on the Miyako Odori Official. Checked: Oct 2024.
Subtle tip: lantern hours mean late closures at parks, but trains get crowded after 20:00. Ride two stops away to a less busy station, then transfer.
How to compare japan trip packages during cherry blossom season
- Check bloom timing buffers: ask for one flex half-day in Tokyo or Kyoto for forecast shifts. We moved our Kyoto night shoot by 24 hours and hit full bloom.
- Demand early-entry plans: a 09:00 Shinjuku Gyoen entry or a 07:45 Miyajima ferry makes a bigger difference than a hotel upgrade.
- Insist on station-walk timings: under 8 minutes to a JR or metro stop saves 20 to 30 minutes daily in queues and walks.
- Vegetarian and halal: confirm dinners near hotel by 20:00 to 21:00 cutoff. In Kyoto, we pre-marked two veg-friendly spots within 600 metres to avoid last-minute scrambles.
- Payment reality: UPI is not accepted in Japan. Carry a Visa or Mastercard with international enabled, plus ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 cash equivalent in small yen notes for kiosks.
Common itinerary mistakes Indians make, and easy fixes
- Squeezing Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Nara into 6 days. Fix: do Tokyo 3 nights, Kyoto 3 nights, day-trip Osaka or Nara. Add Hiroshima only if you have 9 to 10 days.
- Buying a JR Pass blindly. Fix: price your actual legs. If you only do Tokyo to Kyoto return, individual Shinkansen tickets total about ₹16,500 to ₹18,500 (¥28,000 to ¥31,000) round trip, often cheaper than a 7 day pass. Use JR fare calculators. Source: JR West. Checked: Oct 2024.
- Starting park visits at 11:00. Fix: hit one major spot at 07:00 to 09:00, museum midday, another spot after 16:00. We do coffee at 06:45, first gate at 07:30 in peak week.
- Ignoring weather. Fix: carry a light rain jacket and a small towel. Showers are common and benches get damp.
- Vegetarian meals at 21:00. Fix: many veg-friendly kitchens close by 20:00 to 21:00. Eat early or grab convenience-store bentos.

Where to stay for easy sakura access
Tokyo
- Ueno or Asakusa: walk to Ueno Park and Sumida Park. Suits families on a budget. We like being 5 minutes from a JR Yamanote stop.
- Shinjuku: fastest for Shinjuku Gyoen and late-night trains. Suits couples who want nightlife.
- Kudan or Hanzomon, Chiyoda: for Chidorigafuchi, quiet streets, and Imperial Palace access.
Kyoto
- Gion and Higashiyama: stroll to Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine. Early mornings here stay calm and you can grab tofu breakfasts nearby.
- Okazaki: near Philosopher’s Path and Heian Shrine, quieter, great for cherry plus museums.
Osaka
- Tenmabashi or Osaka Business Park: for Osaka Castle Park mornings.
- Namba or Shinsaibashi: transit hub if you are day-tripping Kyoto and Nara.
Hiroshima and Miyajima
- Hiroshima Hondori: tram to Peace Park in minutes, plenty of food courts with veg options.
- Stay a night on Miyajima for crowd-free dawn photos at the torii. We slept near the shopping street and walked to the shoreline by 06:20.
Getting around, step by step
- IC cards: tap-in works on metro, JR local, buses. Welcome Suica and Pasmo Passport are tourist friendly. No deposit on Welcome Suica. Load at machines with cash or card. JR East. Checked: Oct 2024.
- JR Pass or not: after the price hike, the 7 day Ordinary often pays off only if you do at least Tokyo to Hiroshima to Kyoto to Tokyo within 7 days. Otherwise buy individual tickets online or at stations. Compare on JR official sites. Checked: Oct 2024.
- Luggage: use takuhaibin courier, about ₹1,200 to ₹1,800 (¥2,000 to ¥3,000) per bag city to city, 24 hour delivery. We send big bags ahead and ride the Shinkansen with a backpack. Source: Yamato Transport. Checked: Oct 2024.
- SIM and Wi-Fi: public Wi-Fi can be patchy. Grab an eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi at the airport counters. Source: NTT Docomo Wi-Fi Rentals. Checked: Oct 2024.
- Power: Type A and B plug, 100V. Your Indian chargers work with a simple adapter.
Food notes for Indian travellers
- Veg and vegan: search for Shojin Ryori and “veg menu available.” In malls, food courts label allergens in English. We had luck with udon shops, asking for no dashi broth.
- Halal: look for “Halal Gourmet Japan” stickers near Asakusa and Namba. Pre-book dinner if arriving after 20:00.
- Spice level: carry a small sachet of chilli flakes or achaar. Most places do not stock chilli oil by default.
Visa basics for Indian passport holders
- Short-stay tourist visa required. Apply via Japan eVISA or through VFS if instructed by your jurisdiction.
- Typical processing 5 to 10 working days after submission at the mission. Allow 3 weeks including VFS logistics.
- Single-entry fee about ₹1,700 to ₹2,000 equivalent (¥3,000), paid in INR at VFS, varies by exchange rate. Primary source: MOFA Japan eVISA and VFS Japan India. Last checked: Oct 2024.

A smart 8 to 10 day flow

- Lock one sunrise and one night shoot in each city, you will get blossoms in all light.
- Keep one flex half-day to pivot if the forecast shifts.

Worth it vs skip
- Worth it: one paid garden like Shinjuku Gyoen for calm, Osaka Mint’s timed tunnel if you hit mid-April, Miyako Odori for culture in Kyoto.
- Skip: chasing five parks in one day, you will see the same petals and lose time to trains. Also skip a JR Pass if your route is only Tokyo to Kansai one way.
Quick safety and etiquette
- No picking branches, no tarps on lawns unless designated. Take your trash with you, bins are scarce.
- Silence on trains. Queue markers are strict.
- No tipping. Say “arigatou gozaimasu” and smile, it goes a long way.
